‘Mistaken identity’ probe in teen kidnap and serious assault

Ken Foy Crime correspondent

GARDAI are investigating if a teenager who was abducted from near his home in Ballyfermot and brutally assaulted in the Phoenix Park was the victim of mistaken identity.

The 18-year-old was still receiving hospital treatment last night after the horror attack on Sunday night.

Now gardai are working on the theory that he was picked up by mistake.

“This young man may have been the victim of mistaken identity – he was visiting one of his friends when he was bundled into the car,” a source said.

“He got a terrible going over – this is a very unusual but serious case.”

At about 5.15pm on Sunday, the teenager was taken by two men in Cherry Orchard Court in Ballyfermot, bundled into the back of a car and driven to the Phoenix Park where he was attacked.

The teenager was stripped, tied up and restrained in a car at a location at Military Road.

He was beaten up with baseball bats and sustained serious injuries during the incident.

The victim managed to escape from his attackers and gardai were alerted after he flagged down a passing motorist in the park.

No arrests have yet been made.
