Minor miracle for champion family

Fiona Ellis

It was a long time coming but worth it for a man who was reunited with his county minor football championship medal 59 years after losing it.

Peter Doyle (77), from Baltinglass, Co Wicklow, won the football championship medal aged 18 in 1952.

Soon after the match he went to celebrate at a dance in St Joseph's Hall in Blessington. He left his coat in the cloakroom with the medal in the pocket -- only to return later and find the medal gone.

After a fruitless search Mr Doyle gave up hope of ever finding the medal and got on with his life, still playing football but only winning one other medal.

The long-lost medal was rediscovered during a recent refurbishment of St Joseph's Hall -- and Mr Doyle was reunited with it last Friday at the Baltinglass Ladies GAA Juvenile Awards.

It was very much a family affair as his granddaughter received her first Under-16 county medal that evening as well.

"I never dreamt this would have happened. I had long forgotten about it," Mr Doyle said. "I was really surprised to have it back after all these years."
