Middle classes strangled by soaring prices

Social welfare recipients are avoiding the worst of the rampant increases in inflation, while pensioners, young families and the middle classes are being slowly strangled by rising prices, according to the latest Sunday Independent/KBC Bank Cost of Living Survey.

Worst affected are former 'Tiger cubs' who have been poleaxed by the rising costs of mortgage interest payments, health insurance, home heating, electricity, food and fuel.

Pensioners who had previously been untouched are now also suffering from rising costs and charges.
