THE man whose voice is synonymous with Gaelic Games celebrated his 80th birthday in a high style yesterday -- by scaling one the country's highest peaks with 23 friends and family and giving a live interview from the summit.
Micheal O Muircheartaigh said there was no place he would rather be.
Speaking from the top of Mount Brandon in Kerry, the veteran broadcaster revisited his childhood memories of the locality and reminisced about sporting highlights, such as watching Kerry win 20 All-Irelands and Kilkenny win 18.
Joking that next year he might try a live interview from the summit of Everest, the sports commentator noted the wondrous technological advances that made such an on-air chat possible. He said he hoped to be playing golf in St Andrews on Monday.
A special programme celebrating the contribution he makes to Irish life is to be broadcast on Raidio na Gaeltachta on September 10.
