beautiful: The Winter Solstice yesterday in the ancient passage tomb at Newgrange heralds a ray of light upon the country. As the year draws to an end, the last Sunday Independent/ Millward Brown poll of 2013 gives reason to be optimistic for 2014, but also allows us to reflect on the year just passed. The poll sheds light on a people not necessarily bursting with exuberance, but certainly more comfortable about the year ahead. There has been a sharp decrease in the level of pessimism this Christmas, as opposed to last, when pessimism was measured at 59 per cent. This year just over a quarter (27 per cent) think that their 'personal situation' will be 'worse off' this time next year.
