AN MEP has admitted his office was a bit off the rails when he welcomed Google providing a mapping service for trains in Co Donegal.

MEP Jim Higgins said a staff member drafted the statement and didn't realise the last train ran in Donegal 54 years ago, on the final day of 1959.

The MEP for the North West, who is a member of the European Parliament's Transport Committee, expressed his delight over a collaboration between Google and the National Transport Authority. It provides a Satnav-based service on smartphones and tablets so travellers can plan journeys.

The statement read: "This great new service allows users to state their departure or arrival time, choose from several trip options, find the departure times of the next bus or train in Donegal."
