Speaking on RTE's Morning Ireland, Meadhbh's father Joe McGivern said Meadhbh was still in intensive care, and was sedated and on a ventilating machine.

He said the surgical team have said they are happy with the transplant, which they described as "very challenging surgery".

"We just have to wait now for the ventilation equipment to be removed when she can breath independently and her sedation reduced. That can take anywhere from 24 to 48 hours," Mr McGivern said.

Mr McGivern also revealed that family had received a phone-call this morning from President Mary McAleese enquiring about Meadhbh.

He also expressed thanks for all the messages of support they had received from people all around the country.
