McCormack returns to top of the FG tree

Four years after announcing his retirement from politics, Padraic McCormack has risen back to the top of the Finn Gale tree. In a Lazarus-like move, the Galway West TD was triumphantly elected as chairman of the parliamentary party -- eight years after last holding the position.
McCormack took 26 votes on the first count, sitting chairman Tom Hayes got 19, and young turk Joe McHugh got 16. McHugh's votes transferred heavily to Hayes.
Ten went to the Tipp South TD, bringing him up to 29 votes.
Four went to McCormack, putting him on 30. One vote was non-transferable -- a phenomenon known as 'plumping'.
So plumpers are not limited to Sinn Fein, after all.
McCormack was chair of the party during the heave against John Bruton and the election of Michael Noonan. Lets hope his new reign is equally exciting.
