THE grades of almost 58,000 Leaving Certificate examination candidates were dispatched yesterday -- although many pupils will today check their results online.

The old-fashioned distribution network was in full swing at Athlone Mail Centre as workers sifted through thousands of white and orange parcels.

"We'll be working through the night to ensure delivery to all students first thing in the morning and we wish them all the very best of luck," said An Post's Gerry Maxwell.

The results of candidates who sat the exams are available in schools this morning and can also be accessed online and by phone from midday.

Access to the online results service is through www.examinations.ie and requires the use of the candidate's examination number and unique candidate personal identification number (PIN).

Candidates may also get their results by telephone, using their PIN and examination numbers through a touch-tone phone on 1530 719 290. (Calls cost 33c per minute, including VAT. Calls from pay phones and mobiles may cost extra.)

For callers outside the Republic of Ireland, the number is 00 353 1 6885312. (International call rates apply.)

School-based candidates who wish to appeal should do so through their school, while external candidates should follow the instructions that accompany their provisional statement of results.
