A major search operation is set to continue in Wicklow today following reports that a man has drowned.

Emergency services launched an operation around 7.15pm last night after members of the public sighted a man, believed to be in difficulty, swimming in the Blessington Lakes.

Several units from the gardaí, coastguard and the mountain rescue crew were dispatched to the lakes near Lacken, Co Wicklow, to search for the man.

However, a spokesman for the Dublin coastguard confirmed to the Irish Independent that the efforts to locate the man had been unsuccessful.

While some crews were pulled from the operation last night, units from the mountain rescue team searched late into the night.

Members of the coastguard have described the Blessington Lakes as a vast area to search.

It is believed the man was enjoying the hot weather when he got into difficulty.

It is expected crews will resume the search for the man this morning.
