Ms Kennedy said Irish people were "uniquely great" at volunteering with charities.

She said: "I've travelled all over the world and you do not see people going above and beyond their call of duty for the community or for others, just because they want to. I think it's part of our DNA."

Prisoners at Loughan House prison in Blacklion, Co Cavan, are producing 3,000 sunflowers for their local North West Hospice to sell as part of the Irish Hospice Foundation's (IHF) annual fundraising campaign.

Chief officer of Loughan House Geraldine Carrick said the practice has a "positive effect" on the prisoners who choose to partake in the activity.
