POOR old Marty Morrissey is fast becoming the butt of nearly every joke on RTE 2.
First, there was Mario Rosenstock’s perma-tanned and semi-naked impersonation of him.
And this week, the Clare native felt the full force of Jennifer Maguire's ‘punch’ line.
The 32-year-old Republic of Telly star decked sports commentator Marty in the face in the middle of RTE car park while filming an upcoming sketch.
Marty will feature in a skit entitled Edward Hurley-Pants which is loosely based on Tim Burton's 1990 film Edward Scissorhands.
New host Kevin Maguire plays Edward Hurley Pants, a freak of nature born with Hurley sticks instead of arms. Despite this Jennifer falls madly in love with him and clocks Marty in the face when he insults Edward's Hurley hands.
Asked if she found punching Marty an enjoyable experience Jennifer responded: “He took the hit very well. Marty is, and always has been, a very good sport.”
With his arched eyebrow, gleaming teeth and distinctive hairline Marty is easy material for comedy writers.
But RTE sources say the broadcaster would never take offence at any of the sketches.
“He knows everyone is having a bit of fun and Marty is always up for having a laugh. Anyone who works with him knows that,” a source said. The Republic of Telly returned to our screens this week and scored impressive ratings. More than 223,000 people tuned in to watch the season premiere, beating the much-hyped Celebrity Apprentice final.
It was new anchor Kevin MaGahern’s first time hosting the show and viewers seemed impressed with the comedian’s presenting skills.
“It's like the seat was made for you,” one fan wrote on twitter. “Funny and good-looking.”
