FIANNA Fáil leader Micheal Martin today called on the government to "lay off" the elderly and said Labour Minister Jan O'Sullivan should "go back to the drawing board" in relation to the clampdown on grants.
Mr Martin said that the government took a "sneaky" approach by implementing the measures over the New Year which he said represented a "significant attack" on the most vulnerable.
And he accused Housing Minister Jan O'Sullivan of being "somewhat disingenuous" by claiming that she is providing more to those in need.
"The various changes will impact significantly on older people but also people with disabilities. There has been a continual reduction in the number of grants issued year by year," Mr Martin said.
He demanded that Ms O'Sullivan publishes the full report on grants, which was provided to her by an expert group last year.
"I think the minister should go back to the drawing board," he added.
