Martin and faithful friend called to the bar

HE was the first guide dog owner to graduate from NUI Galway with an honours degree in legal studies and politics, and yesterday Martin Gordon (above) took another step up the legal ladder, with dog Jake again by his side.

Mr Gordon, from Sligo, went blind from glaucoma eight years ago, one year before he was due to sit his Leaving Cert. "I didn't really feel panicked or angry," he has said in the past.

"I suppose I just looked at the big picture and figured 'this is the way it is going to be'."

Yesterday his mother Margaret and father Ronald looked on proudly as he became a barrister after being called to the bar at the Supreme Court in Dublin.
