Many households to get €40 extra fuel allowance

Edel Kennedy

THE worst weather in living memory has led to a one-off increase in the fuel allowance payment.

Households in receipt of the €20 per week allowance will receive an additional €40 to help pay their fuel bills.

The move comes at an overall cost to the Exchequer of €14m and indicates that 350,000 households are in receipt of the allowance.

"The Department of Social Protection is putting measures in place to roll out this payment as soon as possible and many households will receive the payment this year," Brian Lenihan said.

Active Retirement Ireland welcomed the payment. "We are happy to see the Government has included an additional payment . . . to help householders cope with the challenges brought about by the cold weather," chief executive Maureen Kavanagh said.
