Man's sudden death linked to heavy fall

Tom Shiel

THE sudden death of a 30-year-old farmer on Saturday night is believed to be linked to a heavy fall on compacted snow and ice just a short time earlier.

The man, named locally as Nicholas Regan from Culcastle, Kilmovee, Ballaghaderreen, Co. Mayo, managed to get upright after the fall and make his way home to his parents.

After telling them of the mishap, which occurred as he walked back from a pub, Mr Regan died suddenly despite efforts to revive him. A post-mortem was carried out yesterday at Mayo General Hospital.

Gardaí said the death appeared to have been the result of "an unfortunate accident.''
