Man who died after kayaking accident on Lough Ree 'was experienced water enthusiast'

A man has died after a kayaking accident on Lough Ree.

The alarm was raised after the man went missing between Lecarrow and Hodson Bay in Co Roscommon at around lunchtime yesterday.

After the alarm was raised, the Coastguard helicopter from Sligo joined the search and identified the man and his kayak in the water.

The man was brought by lifeboat to Coosan Point where he was transferred to an ambulance and brought to Portiuncula Hospital in Galway where he died.

The man is understood to have been an experienced water sports enthusiast.

A garda investigation is now underway.
