A man threatened armed gardaí and fire officers with a chainsaw during a stand-off at his parents' home last night.
The man had earlier doused himself in petrol and climbed on to the roof of a garage adjacent to the house at Annamult Road in Bennettsbridge, Co Kilkenny.
Local garda officers were alerted and when they arrived at the scene they summoned the assistance of the south eastern regional support unit (RSU) and the fire service.
Officers attempted to negotiate with the man and tried to persuade him to come down from the roof.
But after the negotiations broke down the man confronted the gardaí with a chainsaw.
He was immediately tackled and overpowered by members of the RSU, who used non-lethal weapons to subdue him.
The man was arrested under the Mental Treatment Act and taken away to be examined by a doctor.
It is believed that the man had climbed on to the garage roof after becoming involved in an argument and concern for his welfare grew after he poured petrol over himself.
Nobody was injured in the incident.
