Man shot near creche during morning rush hour

A man is in a critical condition after he was shot this morning near a creche in the Donaghmede area of Dublin.

The incident took place at approximately 9am on the Holywell Avenue, Gardai have confirmed to independent.ie

The victim, in his 30s, was approached by a lone gunman and was shot. It is believed he was hit in the head. The gunman left the scene on foot.

The victim had been dropping a child to the creche.

The man in question was shot last year as part of an internal Real IRA feud, and Gardai had warned him his life was in danger.

They are now investigating possible dissident republican links to this morning's shooting.

It is understood that the man was a close associated of former Real IRA figure Alan Ryan. He was wanted by the PSNI in connection with two murders in the North.

The man has been taken by ambulance to Beaumont Hospital. Gardaí are at the scene which is preserved pending a technical examination.

It is understood that the victim is in a critical condition.
