A MAN is seriously ill in hospital after he was hit by a shotgun blast outside Castlebar this afternoon.
The victim (26) is believed to be a member of the Travelling community, is the third member of his family to have been injured in shooting incidents this year.
The man was filling up the water tank in his car at a petrol station at Moneen, outside the Co Mayo town of Castlebar, when his attackers drove past and opened fire with a shotgun.
The crime scene is closed off while a technical crew are examining.
He was rushed by ambulance to Mayo General Hospital where his condition was said later to be serious.
Gardai, meanwhile, are looking for at least two men, who fled from the scene in a dark coloured estate car in the direction of Claremorris.
No arrests have yet been made.
