Details are now emerging of the incident which happened at around 11am at Kilshane Cross which is near Dublin Airport.

Sources say a van was making a delivery in the area when a man approached in a car and attempted to take something from the vehicle while the driver was away from it.

But the driver raised the alarm and the suspect is said to have got back into his car and drove away at speed.

He abandoned the car a short time later and ran into some nearby fields, and the Garda Air Support Unit was deployed to try to locate him along with ground searches.

The injured man was rushed to hospital with injuries described as being serious.

Gardai removed a car and a white van from the scene at around 1.30pm.
