A MAN is being questioned by gardai about a savage attack that has left the victim critically ill in hospital.

The 46-year-old male victim suffered multiple injuries to his ribs and legs after being assaulted in Drogheda early yesterday by a man believed to have been drinking heavily.

The injured man was found lying on a green between Sandyford Terrace and Marion Close at 8.30am.

He was treated on the spot by paramedics before being taken by ambulance to Our Lady of Lourdes hospital in the town.

Last night his condition was described as critical as he was treated for the effects of blunt-force trauma.

Gardai suspect his attacker may have jumped up and down on him after knocking him to the ground.

It is believed the assault took place between midnight and 4.30am.

Following inquiries in the town, gardai arrested a 33-year-old local man yesterday evening and he was taken to Drogheda station for questioning.
