Man killed following collision on M1 motorway

Gardai have confirmed that one man has died following a collision on the M1 in Co Louth this afternoon.

A lorry collided with a van that was parked on the hard shoulder as it had broken down.

The lorry then turned onto its side on an embankment.

The accident happened near Monasterboice on the southbound lane of the motorway, just north of Drogheda.

Gardai, the fire service and the ambulance service are at the scene and a garda spokesman confirmed the motorway will remain closed for a number of hours.

Garda forensic collision investigators and the scenes of crime unit will carry out an examination of the scene.

The accident happened around 1pm.

All southbound traffic is being diverted; northbound traffic is unaffected.
