Man injured as pipe bomb blew up in his yard

A man who sustained injuries to his stomach when a pipe bomb exploded drove to a garda station and reported the incident.

The victim, Sean Hanley, was taken to the Midlands regional hospital in Tullamore where he was undergoing medical treatment last night. His injuries are not serious.

Gardai are investigating the explosion outside Mr Hanley's home at Roscrea Road, Shinrone, Co Offaly, around 3.30pm.

Mr Hanley, who is in his early 50s, told gardai he was about to climb into a vehicle when the pipe bomb exploded in his yard.

Gardai sealed off the area and called in an Army bomb disposal team.
