A man is in a serious condition in hospital after he was shot in the stomach in broad daylight.

The gun attack occurred at around 3pm, close to the man's home at Clonglong Halting Site, on the south side of Limerick city.

A car believed to have been used by the gunman was found burnt out at the Kennedy Park housing estate.

Gardaí sealed off an alley at the rear of a row of houses in the estate where the gold coloured Suzuki Vitara was discovered on fire.

Gardaí said the victim, aged in his "mid 30s", was in a "serious" condition.

According to gardaí the man was not brought to hospital by ambulance but presented himself at University Hospital Limerick, having sustained "apparent gunshot wounds".

A Garda source said the motive for the gun attack was not known.

Gardaí later arrested a man in his 20s "in connection with the shooting".

"The arrested man is detained at Roxboro Road garda station under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act, 1939," gardaí said in a statement.

Gardaí described it as an "ongoing investigation".

It is believed that the firearm used in the incident was a shotgun.

Investigating officers can be contacted at Roxboro Road on 061-214340.
