A man in his forties has been killed in a paragliding accident.

The incident occurred near the Gormanston army camp in Meath at approximately 6pm on Saturday evening.

The man crash-landed at Benn Head, which is close to the barracks.

The man was flying with an engine-powered glider and crash-landed in a few feet of water, according to the Irish Coastguard.

"In spite of the efforts from ourselves, the Gardai, Fire service, ambulance service and members of the public, the male died a short while later," a Coastguard spokesperson said.

"Our sincere condolences to his family and friends."

An air accident investigation has been launched into the incident.
