The young runner suffered a cardiac event close to the finish line in Phoenix Park this morning.

Fellow runners, who are trained paramedics, attended to the young man immediately. The St John's Ambulance medical team were also on scene straight away to help the 23-year-old.

A spokesperson for St John's Ambulance said that advanced life support was administered at the scene.

The man was transferred to Connolly Hospital in Blanchardstown, Dublin, but he was pronounced dead a short time later.

In a statement today, the half-marathon organisers said: "With great regret we must confirm that a 23yr old man passed away at today's race."

"We ask that you respect the family's privacy at this time," organisers added in their statement on Twitter.

Today's half marathon was part of the SSE Airtricity Race Series, a collection of long-distance road races which lead up to the Dublin Marathon on Monday October 26.
