A 34-year-old man is in a critical condition in hospital after he was injured in a hit and run in Dublin at lunchtime today.

The injured man is believed to have a criminal past. Gardai are investigating whether the hit and run may be connected to a prison dispute.

The man was on temporary release and is serving a seven year prison sentence for a violent burglary in Coolock in 2009.

The incident occurred on Trinity Lane, to the rear of Clonliffe Road, in Dublin 3 at around 1pm.

The man was rushed to hospital by emergency services approximately half an hour later after the alarm was raised.

He remains in a critical condition in the Mater Hospital.

Investigating gardai later found a burned out car, which they believe may have been involved in the incident, on Stoney Road in the East Wall area of the city.

Tth scene has been preserved for a technical examination and gardai in Fitzgibbon Street request anyone with information to contact them at 01 666 8400 or the garda confidential hotline on 1800 666 111.
