A MAN who shot himself in the head with his own gun was taken to hospital after a tense two-hour stand-off with gardai on a suburban street.

Officers were alerted at 3.30pm yesterday to reports that a man had been shot outside a house at Farrenboley Park in Windy Arbour, Dundrum, on the southside of Dublin.

The man was found sitting in a car and was bleeding from a head wound.

Gardai said he had threatened to fire the weapon again and trained negotiators were drafted in to talk to him as armed officers remained on standby.

After almost two hours the man, who was in his early 40s, agreed to hand over the gun and was brought to St James's Hospital.

He was described as being in a critical condition last night.

During the incident, nearby roads were cordoned off. Hours later gardai removed a car.

One officer said last night: "This man did not threaten to harm anybody, except himself, and the incident was handled through discussion, which resulted in a successful outcome."
