Man held as woman dies after being hit by car on Luas line

A man is being questioned by gardai after a woman died when she was hit by a car on a Luas line, writes Mark O'Regan.

The unnamed woman in her fifties died after being hit by the car which crashed into two pedestrians at the junction of Abbey Street and Jervis Street in Dublin city centre at lunchtime yesterday. It happened close to the Jervis Luas stop.

The driver of the car involved, a man in his thirties, was arrested shortly afterwards and is being held at Store Street garda station.

The pedestrians, a man and a woman, were rushed to the Mater hospital where the woman was later pronounced dead. The man is believed to have suffered serious leg injuries.

Gardai have appealed for witnesses to contact them at Store Street garda station on 01 666 8000.
