A man is being questioned by gardai after a stolen car was set alight in the housing estate where a gangland murder was carried out last week.

Officers investigating the murder of Gerard Eglington in Portarlington, Co Laois, made the arrest as they were involved in follow-up inquiries into the shooting.

The incident took place on Thursday night in the Kilnacourt Woods housing estate where Mr Eglington lived with his partner and two children.

Gardai were alerted that a car had been set on fire and minutes later detained the suspect, who was being held last night at Portlaoise station.

The suspect, who is in his 20s, is understood to be living in the town.

Gardai are continuing to make progress in their murder investigation with the help of CCTV footage taken from cameras in the area and along the route between Portarlington and Dublin.

Gardai believe the two unmasked killers carried out the "hit" as a favour to members of a rival gang, who had threatened to kill him.

Meanwhile, in an unrelated incident in Rathangan, Co Kildare, on Thursday night, gardai called in an Army bomb disposal team to deal with an explosive device that had been left outside a house in the town.

Last night, gardai were trying to establish a motive for the attack on the house.
