The man, who has been named locally as Graham Peete, was rushed to Kerry General Hospital yesterday afternoon following an incident at a house in Meelish Close, Listowel.

Gardai were alerted when Mr Peete arrived at a neighbour's house in a distressed state. He told the neighbour he had been stabbed and the neighbour alerted the gardai and the emergency services.

The incident happened in the small estate off the John B Keane Road in the town at around 12.30pm yesterday.

Mr Peete is in his 40s and not from the area but has been living there for a number of years.

He remained in the intensive care unit at the hospital last night but his injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

Gardai have yet to interview him in relation to the incident, which they are treating as a serious assault.

The house was cordoned off yesterday while a technical examination was carried out by a garda forensics team.

Gardai have also completed house-to-house inquiries in the area. They are appealing to anyone who was in the Meelish Close area between midnight and 12pm on December 28 and who may have noticed anything to contact them at 068-21000.
