Man freed over 'buried drugs cash'

A stash of money worth more than one million euro which was seized in Co Limerick

One of two men arrested after a stash of more than 1 million euro was dug up in a field has been released.

A 53-year-old man detained over the weekend after wads of notes were found in a hut remains in custody.

Gardai arrested the men after attempts were made to retrieve the hidden cash from a field in Portcrusha, Castleconnell, Co Limerick.

It is understood the stash was worth up to 1.25m euro and had been buried more than 6ft underground.

The arrested man remains in custody at Henry Street Garda Station and is being questioned under Section 2 of the Criminal Justice (Drug Trafficking) Act.

Another man arrested near the field was released without charge.

It is understood the arrests follow a surveillance operation and the money is believed to be profits from the drug trade.
