Man fights for life after vicious assault
Gardai have appealed for help from the public as they investigate a vicious weekend assault which left a young man fighting for his life.
The 25-year-old victim, named locally as Errol Dunne, from Clogherhead, Co Louth, was last night in a critical condition in Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda.
He suffered a serious head injury and was being treated in intensive care.
"We have set up an incident room and are conducting a full-scale investigation including house to house enquiries," said Garda Superintendent Gerry Smith.
The row occurred outside the Harbour Bar on Harbour Road in Clogherhead between 1am and 1.30am yesterday.
Supt Smith has appealed for any witnesses to the incident or anyone with information to contact gardai on 041-9838777.
The Harbour Road, which is a few metres from the main street in Clogherhead, was closed until yesterday afternoon while gardai carried out a technical examination of the scene.
It is understood this included a search for anything that may have been used to inflict the head injuries sustained by Mr Dunne.
Mr Dunne's mother and two brothers and two sisters maintained a bedside vigil with him in hospital yesterday. His father died a number of years ago.
Meanwhile, gardai are investigating an attack in Midleton, Co Cork, which left a young man with multiple stab injuries.
The alarm was raised when the man, who is from the east Cork area, made his way to the garda station shortly after 2am yesterday.
He had been stabbed in the neck and face during an argument in an apartment at Millennium Court, off the Mill Road, in Midleton. The victim was rushed by ambulance to Cork University Hospital where he underwent surgery for his injuries.
His injuries are not understood to be life threatening.
Any witnesses or anyone with information is asked to contact Midleton Garda Station on 021-4621550.
