A full investigation into the incident has been launched into the tragedy in the townland of Glencovitt. The man, named locally as farmer Joseph McDermott, was very well-known in the area.

NEW NAVY SHIP HOME

IRELAND'S new €50m patrol vessel, the LE Samuel Beckett, was cheered wildly as it was accorded a traditional navy welcome to its new home port.

Naval Service boats and Cork harbour tugs provided a special 'water cannon' salute as the hi-tech vessel completed its delivery cruise from a UK shipyard and entered Cork harbour.

BOX CUTTER ATTACK

FRIGHTENED shoppers looked on as a young man slashed another man's face with a box cutter on a busy street in the middle of the day. The incident happened at around 3.40pm yesterday, on Dublin's Henry Street outside Debenhams department store.

The slash victim and two friends all ran into the Ilac Centre – leaving a trail of blood – and it is understood he dropped to the ground opposite the library once inside. Paramedics from Dublin Fire Brigade and plain clothes gardai were on the scene within minutes.
