The man, who was driving the Mercedes involved in the two-car collision, is understood to have been in his 60s.

The woman driver and a passenger in the other car were taken to St Luke's Hospital in Kilkenny.

Gardai have asked anyone who was on the N9 yesterday morning between 7am and 8am to contact Carlow garda station on 059 9136620.

Gardai in Carlow particularly want to talk to a man in a dark tracksuit who was walking or jogging in the area around the time of the crash.

Fine Gael road safety spokesperson Tom Hayes urged drivers to take care on the roads this bank holiday weekend after the Carlow crash that led to the death of the man, whose name has yet to be released. "It is clear we can never afford to let road safety standards slip," he said.
