Man dies in road accident

An elderly man has died after he was hit by a vehicle in Co Meath.

An elderly man has died after he was hit by a vehicle in Co Meath.

The incident happened on Main Street, Athboy at around 6.15pm.

The 77-year-old was rushed to Our Ladies Hospital in Navan where he was pronounced dead.

A post-mortem examination is to be arranged.

The driver of the vehicle, who was the only occupant, was not injured.

The road around the scene has been closed for a forensic examination.

Another pedestrian was killed as he tried to cross a road in Galway.

The 65-year-old man was hit by a car at Tully Church on the Galway to Carraroe road at around 6.20pm.

The victim was removed to University Hospital Galway where a post-mortem examination will be carried out.

The driver of the car involved, who was the only occupant, was not hurt.

Gardai have arranged a technical examination at the scene and have appealed for witnesses.
