Man dies as car crashes into concrete column on M8
A man was killed after the car he was driving crashed into a concrete column.
The male driver (44) was the sole occupant of the vehicle which lost control yesterday afternoon in Co Tipperary.
The man's car crashed into a concrete pillar shortly after 3pm near Cashel on the M8 motorway, just past junction 7 in the southbound direction.
The man was pronounced dead at the scene in the townland of Ballyknock.
His body was taken to Waterford Regional Hospital where a post-mortem examination is due to take place.
The road was closed by gardaí in order to facilitate an examination by forensic collision investigators.
However, it was reopened following a two-hour closure.
Gardaí in Cashel are appealing for witnesses to contact them at the Garda station or on the Garda confidential line.
It brings the total number killed in road accidents in the country this year to 117.
This is 22 lower than at the same time in 2016, when 139 people had died.
