Man dies after hotel window fall

A 20-year-old man died in hospital yesterday afternoon after plunging 12 metres from a hotel window.

Conor Duddy, Lecky Road, Brandywell, Derry, fell from the third-floor window of the Abbey Hotel in the centre of Donegal Town in the early hours of Sunday morning. The critically injured youth was rushed to Letterkenny General Hospital where he died yesterday afternoon.

Volvo recalls cars with faulty gears

VOLVO has initiated a worldwide recall of 29,299 cars because of a problem with the gear shift.

The recall involves approximately 35 cars that have been delivered to customers in Ireland this year, with Volvo Ireland contacting the customers affected. A spokesman for Volvo said the recall involved all models for 2010 and 2011 that have a six-speed manual gear box.

Jewellery thief in High Court appeal

SOLICITORS for an Iranian jewellery thief are to seek a High Court judicial review of a ruling by a district court judge to impose a one-year jail term on him.

At Ennis Circuit Court yesterday, counsel for Ali Reza Velayati (41) said district court justice Judge Joseph Mangan acted beyond his power in sentencing Velayati to two six-month sentences for theft of jewellery worth €62,000 before referring the case to the Circuit Court.

Seaplane plans for west take off

PLANS for a new seaplane service were given a boost yesterday after it was given the green light for a base on Lough Derg.

Clare County Council yesterday granted planning permission for Harbour Flights Ireland Ltd to build a base at Mountshannon. The company has lodged four applications in Galway, Limerick and Clare to allow a seaplane to land in Lough Derg, the River Shannon in Limerick city, Galway city docks and the main harbour serving Inis Mor.

Appeal for help on missing teen

GARDAI have appealed to the public for help in tracking a missing teenager. Aishling Fitzsimons (16) was last spotted in the Ballymun area of north Dublin on Thursday June 17.

She was last seen wearing a pink hooded sweatshirt, blue jeans and black shoes. She is described as 5ft9in tall, of slim build, with short blonde hair and blue eyes. Gardai at Swords have appealed for anyone who may have seen the young teenager to contact the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111.
