Man critical after throat is slashed in attack

A MAN was in a critical condition last night after he was slashed across his throat in a city laneway by an assailant with whom he had been drinking.

Gardai in Limerick were questioning a man and woman in connection with the incident.

After staggering a short distance, the man -- aged in his mid 20s -- collapsed in a pool of blood on Parnell Street in front of shocked shoppers.

His condition last night was described as "critical but stable" in the Mid-Western Regional hospital in Limerick.

It is believed the attack occurred after the victim -- a convicted criminal from the city's suburbs -- had been drinking with the man and woman. Around 3.30pm, a fight broke out and the man was slashed across his throat.

The bloody scene is just a short distance from Colbert Station -- the main train and bus station in the city.

Gardai arrested a man and woman -- both aged in their 20s -- at a property in Upper Cecil Street. It is understood that both are from the city and are known to the gardai.
