Man critical after attack

A 22-year-old man is in a critical condition in hospital after an assault in Waterford. The man received head injuries in an incident at a halting site at Williamstown in Waterford city at about 1.30am yesterday morning.

He was taken to Ardkeen Hospital and then transferred to Cork University Hospital when his condition deteriorated. His condition is now described as critical. Gardai have arrested two men – aged 20 and 22 – in connection with the assault.

DANGERS OF TEXTING

ONE-in-10 drivers have had a "near miss" while texting at the wheel, a new study reveals.

It also claims that texting is the most common and dangerous distraction for drivers. And it discovers that women send or receive far more messages than men while driving.

FARMER'S BODY FOUND

Investigators believe that a farmer whose body was found in a drain near his home died in a tragic accident.

Neighbours and friends searching for John Finnerty (64), Ahascragh, Co Galway, made the discovery yesterday. He had been missing since Thursday night, when he was last seen in Ballinasloe.
