Brian Hutton

A man has been arrested over a fire attack on a manned Garda station.

The suspect, in his mid-20s, walked into Castlebar Garda station, in Co Mayo, at around 4am today and threw a "flamed object", gardai said.

The device was launched at a hatch in the station which was closed at the time. No-one was injured.

Two members of the force who were on duty at the time chased the man as he fled.

He was later caught a short distance away and taken to Westport Garda station.

The man is being held under section four of the Criminal Justice Act.

Gardai said the man was known to them. Castlebar Garda station suffered some smoke damage and has been temporarily closed.
