Man arrested in connection with Cavan hospital death

A man has been arrested following the death of an elderly man in Cavan today at a psychiatric hospital.

His body was discovered at the Mental Health Services at Cavan General hospital at 7am.

A postmortem on the 82-year-old victim will be carried out later.

The arrested man, who is in his 40s, is being held at Cavan Garda station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.

Two separate investigations have already been launched into the incident.

A Garda spokesman said the patient's body was found in the unit in Cavan at about 7am and an investigation has been launched.

Separately, the Health Service Executive said it was examining all circumstances of the death and all appropriate procedures were being followed including informing the Mental Health Commission, as required by law.

It confirmed that the incident happened in the Cavan-Monaghan Mental Health Acute Inpatient Unit in Cavan General Hospital.

Another man, in his 40s, has been arrested.

The suspect, also understood to be a patient at the hospital, was detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act at Cavan Garda Station.

"The HSE is providing support to patients, their families and staff at this time. The HSE has expressed its sympathy to the family of the deceased," the HSE added in a statement.

A post-mortem examination is to be carried out later.
