A man in his twenties has been arrested in connection with a shooting in Tullamore, Co. Offaly yesterday evening.
The gunman opened fire at a father in his thirties as he walked home with his wife and his seven-year-old son.
The incident happened at approximately 7pm in the Cluain Darach estate, on the Daingean Road, in Tullamore, Co Offaly.
At least three shots were fired at the young father as he approached the front door of his house.
The would-be assassin then ran back to the car and sped off.
Gardai said the vehicle was later discovered burnt out in Durrow, Co Laois,
The injured male and female were taken to the Midland Regional Hospital in Tullamore with non-life-threatening injuries. The boy was unharmed.
The arrested man is currently being detained at Tullamore Garda Station under the provisions of Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act.
The area witnessed a number of shootings and violent incidents over the last three years.
In the summer of 2010, gardai were forced to set up armed checkpoints following at least three shooting incidents.
The front door of a house in the Cluain Darach estate was blasted with a shotgun in one of the incidents.
In a more serious shooting three days later, a 24-year-old woman received pellet wounds to her leg when two shotgun blasts struck the front window of a house.
Her partner and two children, who were in the house at the time, were not injured in the shooting.
In a third gun attack a shot was fired through the bedroom window of a house at the nearby Arden View estate.
