Man accused of raping his mother goes on trial in Dublin reporters

A man has accused of raping his then 65-year-old mother at her home in Dublin three years ago has gone on trial.

The court heard the accused told gardaí that the sexual intercourse on March 2, 2008, was consensual and happened on the evening of Mother’s Day.

In opening statements, the prosecution told the jury that the now 69-year-old widow had gone to bed early after coming home from a four-course lunch.

Sometime after 11pm, the doorbell rang and it was her son.

It is alleged the accused poured a vodka and the pair talked.

The woman was wearing nightclothes.

The alleged victim said the next thing she remembers is coming to on the floor of her home to find her son having sexual intercourse with her.

She said she repeatedly asked him to leave her alone.

The jury heard the man arrested two days later.

While he admitted to having sexual intercourse with his mother, he told gardaí that she had encouraged and he gave in because he was under the influence of alcohol.
