A man has been killed after being struck by a car while trying to move a dead horse off the road in Co Mayo late last night.

The 45-year-old was struck by a car at Grallagh, Ballyhaunis just before midnight.

The victim's horse had been killed in an earlier incident when it was hit by a vehicle and local sources say the man was in the process of moving the dead animal from the scene with another man when he was struck by an oncoming car.

He was pronounced dead at the scene and his body was brought to Mayo General Hospital for post mortem examination.

The man was from the nearby townland of Gurraun.

No other persons were injured in the incident.

The scene of the accident was preserved for examination by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators and traffic diversions were in place early today.

The local Coroner was also notified.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Ballyhaunis Garda Station 094 - 9630008 or the Garda Confidential Line 1800 666 111.
