A 42-YEAR-OLD man doused himself in petrol and set himself on fire in broad daylight.
Families, including young children, watched on in horror as the shocking incident unfolded in a housing estate in Navan, Co Meath last night.
The man had earlier been heard shouting outside one of the homes in the estate.
Sources say he was in a disorientated state and returned hours later with a can of petrol.
He stood in the garden of the property - located in the Townspark estate - and doused himself in petrol.
He then set himself on fire and was heard screaming in agony.
Neighbours who heard the commotion ran out and poured buckets of water over the man in an attempt to put out the flames.
He was rushed to hospital but died from severe burns to his body.
Gardai described the incident as a "personal tragedy".
The glass of the front room of the property had burn marks on it today.
A source told the Herald:
"The man was going through a very bad time and this episode has shocked the area".
