Man (30s) dies after car leaves road and crashes into tree

A man in his thirties was killed in a car collision overnight.

The man was killed after the car he was driving left the road and struck a tree on the N52 Tullamore to Nenagh Road at approximately 11.15pm last night.

The incident occurred at Derrydonnelly in Kilcormac, Co Offaly.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

His body was taken to the Midland Regional Hospital in Tullamore, where a post mortem is to be arranged.

Gardaí have closed the road to traffic and are carrying out a forensics investigation at the scene.

Officers are now appealing for witnesses and anyone with information, particularly those who may have travelled the N52 close to Kilcormac last night, to contact them at Tullamore Garda Station on 057 9327600, The Garda Confidential Line 1800 666111 or any Garda Station.

The man's death is the third fatality on Ireland's roads over the weekend.

Cyclist Tonya McEvoy was part of a cycling group on a leisure trip when she was involved in a collision with a car at Rathcoffey, Co Kildare, yesterday morning.

In a separate incident, a woman in her 50s died after her car left the road and struck a tree in Co Galway yesterday morning.

The crash occurred at 8.30am on the Killimor to Kiltormer Road, off the N65, at Lisdeligny, Portumna, Co Galway.
