Gardaí have arrested a man as part of an operation targeting dissident republican activity.

Following searches in Jenkinstown in County Louth earlier this week, a suspect in his 30s was taken into custody this afternoon by officers from the Dundalk Garda station.

He is currently being held under the provisions of Section 30, Offences Against the State Act, 1939 as amended.

Searches and investigations are ongoing, said Gardaí.

On Monday, a cache of AK47s, a sniper rifle and components for mortar bombs were reportedly discovered buried on farmland near Jenkinstown, close to the southern shores of the Cooley peninsula in Co Louth.

Some of the material was hidden in barrels.

A quantity of ammunition was also recovered.
