Gardai are appealing for witnesses after an MMA fighter was brutally assaulted with iron bars, bottles and knives and left for dead in Cork over the weekend.
MMA fighter Paul Healy (27) from Donoughmore, Co Cork was brutally attacked in Blackpool on Saturday night.
He told Independent.ie that he was left battling for his life with a severe brain bleed, a broken jaw, eye sockets and nose, as well as a fractured skull.
"I was released from hospital yesterday because the bleeding in my brain has stopped but I'll have to back in for surgery on my broken jaw. I'm in a lot of pain but the medication is helping."
Mr Healy said he was on the way to the ATM to take out money to get a taxi home when he was attacked.
"As a MMA fighter myself, I tried to fight one of them off but another one smashed a bottle over my head and I don't remember the rest. I was stabbed and badly beaten."
Mr Healy originally spoke to Cork's RedFM on the Neil Prendeville show appealing for witnesses to come forward.
"I just want anyone that knows anything to come forward to the guards or locals so that they can be arrested and charged, I am a good young fella and these people who done this need to be stopped. I am lucky to be alive," Mr Healy told The Neil Prendeville show.
Gardaí at Watercourse Road said they are investigating the assault of a 27-year-old man during an incident in the Orchard Court area of Blackpool. They said the man sustained serious head and facial injuries during the incident which occurred shortly before midnight.
Gardaí and Emergency services attended the scene and the man was taken by Ambulance to Cork University Hospital. His condition is understood to be stable.
